Through the support of THE BILLFISH FOUNDATION membership, 1999 was a very productive year.

1. prevented the demise of the Atlantic Billfish Plan;

2. purchased 100,000 sailfish and white marlin circle hooks for distribution to anglers, clubs and tournaments;

3. supported and applauded the introduction of tag and release tournament fishing in Hawaii, the Canary Islands, and Angola;

4. urged development of a management plan for Pacific Highly Migratory Species off the west coast of the U.S. (work has begun);

5. supported Venezuela in expanding the La Guaira Bank closure;

6. welcomed good news of the recovering North Atlantic swordfish stocks after nine years of domestic and international regulations, and

7. proudly introduced, on Capitol Hill, the most far-reaching legislation for billfish conservation.  A press release and fact sheet are enclosed that review key points of the legislation.
